God's Love

For God so loved the world,

that he gave his only begotten Son,

that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,

but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

What can we learn about God’s love from this verse?

God's love is the highest form of love

The Greek word translated “loved” is “agapao”. This is a completely selfless love – a love that wants the best for someone else no matter what it costs the one who loves.

God's love is indiscriminate

God loves the entire world. That includes you and me and everyone else.

God's love is giving

Someone has wisely said, “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving”. It is possible to give with a motivation other than love. Many people do this at tax season by giving to a charity for the sole purpose of getting their taxable income into a lower tax bracket. There is nothing wrong with this in itself, but the motivation is not love. On the other hand, love always gives – it is its nature to give.

God's love is the best because he gave the best.

There is nothing more precious to God the Father than his Son. Someone once said, “I might be willing to give my life for someone else but I would never be able to give my son's life for someone else”. Yet this is exactly what the Father did.

God's love is offered freely to all who will believe

God's love cost him everything but costs us nothing.

God's love has a purpose

God's love rescues us from eternal death and gives us eternal life.
