“This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears”

Luke 4:16-21

16. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

The book of Esaias (Isaiah) is a “messianic” book (which means that much that is written in this book speaks of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Jesus read from the 61st chapter.

18. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because

he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

“he hath anointed me”

The word “Christ” means “anointed one”. Jesus was declaring himself to be the Christ as he read this scripture

“to preach the gospel”

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.” (Matthew 11:4-5)

“to heal the brokenhearted”

“Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.” (Luke 7:12-15)

“to preach deliverance to the captives”

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

“and recovering of sight to the blind”

“And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.” (Mark 10:51- 52)

“to set at liberty them that are bruised”

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

“To preach the acceptable year of the Lord”

“Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.” (Luke 14:16-17)

20. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
