Proof that the Bible is God's Word

First, it is important to establish the fact that there is no Christian faith apart from the Bible. It is by the Bible that God has chosen to reveal his truths to all people.

No one has ever been born again except by the word of God:

"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible,

by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."

I Peter 1:23

There is no spiritual growth apart from God's word:

"As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word,

that ye may grow thereby:"

I Peter 2:2

Those who love God and desire to obey him will follow God's word:

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish,

neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."

John 10:27-28

Those who follow God love his word:

"O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day."

Psalm 119:97

The Bible must be accepted by faith, but this is not a "blind faith". There are many proofs that the Bible is the very word of God. Let us look at some of them:

PERFECT ACCURACY:

Perfect scientific accuracy:

Consider some examples from the book of Job:

Job said the earth is hung upon nothing (Job 26:7) Secular understanding

did not accept this fact until many centuries later.

Job described the springs of the sea (Job 38:16). Man had no way to know

about the fresh-water springs on the ocean floor by firsthand observation

until recent times. Modern science has discovered that there are thousands

of underwater springs that add millions of metric tons of water to the

oceans each year.

Job describes the amazing hydrological cycle (evaporation, atmospheric

circulation, condensation, precipitation, run-off) (Job 36:27-28). The

process of evaporation and condensation was not discovered until the 17th

century and not well understood until the 20th.

Perfect historic accuracy:

There are 29 kings mentioned in the Bible that have been found by archaeologists on monuments and documents made when those kings reigned. We can compare the lists of the order in which the kings reigned. Every one of these is given his right name in the Bible, his right country, and placed in the correct chronological order. The best secular historians rarely spelled even one name correctly.

PERFECT CONSISTENCY:

God used at least 40 different men of various backgrounds and occupations throughout a period of approximately 1600 years to pen the Bible and yet no one ever has proven that it contains a single error. No other book in human history comes remotely close to this. Every book within the Bible presents the grand theme of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. Given all of this, how could anyone but God have been the author of such a book?

FULFILLED PROPHESY:

The Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecies by J. Barton Payne lists 1817 specific prophecies, many of which have already been fulfilled. Consider the detailed prophesies of Christ in the book of Isaiah for example. No other book has ever been able to do this. Is this not the very word of God?

PRESERVATION:

Far exceeding any other book in history, the Bible has been hated, mocked, vilified, slandered, banned, and burned. But the most ardent and desperate efforts of people and Satan himself have not been able to destroy it. In addition, no other book has been read more than the Bible. As has been well stated, “We might as well put our shoulder to the burning wheel of the sun, and try to stop it on its flaming course, as attempt to stop the circulation of the Bible” (Sidney Collett, All about the Bible, p. 63).

CHRIST’S ENDORSEMENT:

In John 10:35, Jesus said “the scripture cannot be broken”. Jesus always quoted from the Bible with absolute authority and confidence. A few examples are: the creation (Mark 13:19), Adam and Eve (Matthew 19:4-6; Mark 10:6-7), Cain and Abel (Matthew 23:35; Luke 11:50-51), Noah and the flood (Matthew 24:37-39), Lot’s wife turning to salt (Luke 17:32), Moses and the burning bush (Mark 12:26), Jonah and the whale (Matthew 12:39-41; Luke 11:29-32).

“Thy word is true from the beginning:

and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”

Psalm 119:160
